The Atma Approach to Male Hypogonadism: A Case Study -- By Dr. Stephen Stevenson

Trevor* came to Atma Clinic with several years of history of cognitive decline, severe fatigue, depression, and prostatism (an enlarged prostate gland). He had been treated with antidepressants, and he was prescribed medications to treat the symptoms of prostatism, but his symptoms and struggles continued.

He had the option of continuing with his current medications and persistent symptoms as recommended by his previous doctors or trying something different. Trevor chose to came to Atma Clinic for a second opinion, where we quickly determined that we needed to evaluate and search for underlying cause of his current symptoms.

We determined that Trevor was hypogonadal (he had a low free testosterone accompanied by several classic symptoms of low testosterone). The Atma Approach is always to fix the underlying issue. In this case, that meant addressing the lifestyle measures that frequently contribute to hypogonadism, including poor nutrition, inadequate exercise, inadequate sleep, excessive stress with inadequate stress reduction techniques, and decreasing exposure to environmental toxins.

Trevor embraced the recommended lifestyle changes and was temporarily started on DHEA, a testosterone precursor, in order to help elevate testosterone levels until lifestyle measures had an opportunity to start making an impact. Within three months, Trevor had a dramatic improvement in his symptoms, and six months out, he was able to discontinue the DHEA without the return of his previous symptoms of hypogonadism.
