6 Tips to Avoid the Common Cold -- By Dr. Neela Sandal

Pretty soon, people may find themselves getting more and more colds. We have all been hiding from viruses for a while through social distancing and masking. But as restrictions lift up, we're going to be exposed to regular, run-of-the-mill viruses more, such as the common cold.

The pandemic has led to a ton of tools and research on things that used to be speculative when it comes to preventing and treating viruses. "Maybe this works, maybe this doesn't" has been the best we knew on certain approaches. For Covid-19 prevention and treatment, we pulled out all the stops because we needed every available resource. There is great research now and ongoing showing the value of preventing a lot of illnesses as well as what works effectively in treating some illnesses.

The bottom line is that everyone should be routinely taking some measures for keeping their immune health strong. Since we now have fairly firm science showing how to minimize the irritation to ourselves and our communities, we can definitely say these 6 tips to avoid the common cold work:

  1. Each day, make sure you're getting enough Vitamin D, Vitamin C, and Zinc.

  2. Wear a mask when you're symptomatic (such as coughing or sneezing) if you must go out.

  3. Engage in routine exercise even if just for 10-15 minutes a day.

  4. Spend time outdoors for your overall health.

  5. Practice whatever helps you keep stress levels down, including meditation and other relaxation practices.

  6. Get enough sleep.

We'll be learning more of the results of a lot of current research in the future, but for now, we know these measures are effective.
