I founded Atma Clinic to provide thoughtful, cutting edge, and comprehensive care to my home community. I also direct the clinic and its practitioners.

After graduating from Cornell University (B.A. with Distinction, Biology) and the University of Kansas (Doctor of Medicine), I completed my medical residency in Family Medicine at the University of Arizona. There I studied closely with leaders in Integrative and Functional Medicine through the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, drawing from the best in Western and Eastern Medicine. Before starting Atma Clinic, I worked in a more traditional clinic, serving patients with many chronic and acute conditions.

I incorporate Ayurveda, herbalism, energy healing, yoga, and many other complementary healing methods into the best current science and research when crafting individual treatment plans.

  • Metabolic Conditions (High blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, etc)

  • Auto-immune disease (Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Vitiligo, Scleroderma, etc)

  • Gut Health (Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis, Chronic Bloating, SIBO, etc)

  • Chronic Infections (Chronic Lyme, Strep Colonization, etc)

  • Hormone Optimization (Sex hormones, Thryoid hormones, etc)

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Biotoxicity (Mold toxicity, etc)

  • Mental and Spiritual Health (Anxiety, Depression, Stress, ADHD, OCD, etc)

My passion is helping patients find their health. This may mean finding improvement in a complicated illness (the single most common story I hear is, “Doc, I just got back from Mayo, and they couldn’t figure it out!”), helping an elite athlete get that extra five percent, and anything in between. I have a special interest in helping people discover a greater connection between their spirit and body.

I started Atma Clinic because I wanted to practice medicine in a more effective and holistic manner. My education and training empowered me to make a huge difference in my clients' health and vitality, but the business-as-usual medical system was keeping me from spending the necessary time and attention with my clients. Through Atma's subscription model, I'm able to form lasting partnerships with my patients

Beyond the Office

I grew up in Lawrence and Baldwin City, and I'm delighted to practice in my home community. In 2008, I married Kansas native, Hannah (Kern). We love taking our daughter and son out to explore the plants, rocks, bugs, and animals in our neighborhood. I enjoy traveling, reading science fiction, and relaxing in good company.

I earned my medical degree and completed my residency at the University of Kansas, then spent 25 years practicing the full scope of outpatient conventional Family Medicine in many settings. In the last three years of my conventional practice, I specialized in hormone replacement therapy for men.

In 2015, I was introduced to Functional Medicine by a colleague, and I realized I had found my life's calling. This approach is not a replacement for traditional Family Medicine, but an excellent complement to it. In 2017 I completed the Institute of Functional Medicine's extensive certification program to become a Certified Functional Medicine Provider. I went on to become a Bredesen Certified Provider because of my ongoing interest in cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's Disease, but my practice covers the full scope of Functional Medicine.

I have been on a personal healing journey and am excited to share what I have learned, both as patient and provider, to assist others on the path back to health.

Beyond the Office

My wife and I live on a farm north of Lawrence where we grow a large amount of our food organically in two large gardens, several big berry patches, and a small orchard. We built a wood-fired Finnish Sauna several years ago and love having guests over for a sauna followed by a potluck.

After earning my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from MidAmerica Nazarene University, I worked as a nurse in a functional medicine clinic and as an ICU nurse at the University of Kansas Medical Center. I received my Master of Science in Nursing degree from Graceland University in the Family Nurse Practitioner program.

One of the things I love most about nursing is getting to know and building relationships with my patients and their families. As a nurse practitioner at the Atma Clinic I am able to spend more time with my patients and provide care for the whole person.

Holistic Primary Care for all ages, including illnesses, minor injuries, annual physical exams, and related health issues.

I was introduced to functional medicine and nutrition at a young age from my parents, who were self-educated in holistic medicine. Through my own childhood illnesses, I have seen how functional medicine, diet, and lifestyle can improve one’s health. I'm passionate about providing personalized care and helping others find root causes of their health challenges.

Beyond the Office

My wife, Kaitlyn, and I have two preschool-age daughters. I enjoy spending time with my family outdoors exploring, biking, camping, cooking, gardening, and teaching others about sustainable living.

I am an herbalist and Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner who is passionate about helping people find their best health through nutrition.Through my training, I've learned how to apply a holistic approach that assesses the body’s nutritional deficiencies and needs, then addresses them through whole foods, supplements, and lifestyle changes. Microbiome Bootcamp is a program that I created to enhance nutrient breakdown and absorption while repairing damaged G.I. systems. I'm a certified instructor in the RESTARTprogram, which assists people in sugar detoxes and dietary improvements.

  • Nutrition and Functional Nutrition Therapy

  • RESTART Group Classes

  • Microbiome Bootcamp Group Classes

Since journeying from illness to health through the power of nutrition, I am inspired to help clients on their own journeys into health and wellness. My own story includes eight years of searching for better health after being diagnosed with Celiac disease and hypothyroidism. Through trying various elimination diets and studying nutrition, I found my way to greater health, inspiring me to become a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner.

Beyond the Office

In my free time, I love to explore nature with my kids and to pass on Earth wisdom to others, especially youngsters. I regularly lead wild edible and medicinal plant identification hikes, and I teach cooking classes at the Merc, utilizing ancient food traditions.

I am board-certified as a Public Health Clinical Nursing Specialist, an Advanced Practice Holistic Nurse, a holistic Health and Wellness Nurse-Coach, and a Four Winds’ Energy Medicine Practitioner. I have practiced nursing as a clinician and as an educator since 1974. I received my Master’s degree in Community Health Nursing in 1993 from Wichita State University.

At Atma Clinic, I help adults solve complex mental health and relationship issues by examining the roots of their struggles and learning how to confidently take effective action and integrate powerful tools for the rest of their lives.

  • Holistic mental health counseling

  • Pain relief and chronic pain

  • Stress management

  • Energy healing

I began applying holistic health approaches in 1977 when I learned that the default method of giving birth in my rural county was tying the mother’s hands and feet to the delivery table so she couldn’t move, then “assisting” the birth with metal forceps. Instead, I chose to trust nature and train during my pregnancy as if giving birth was an athletic event: I consciously chose my food, exercise, and mindset, and I joyfully delivered a healthy baby girl at home. That experience opened my spirit to a new world of possibilities, and I dedicated myself to learning about and advocating for holistic health and trust in our innate capacity to heal.

Beyond the Office

Outside of the Atma Clinic, I direct “Awakening to Grace,” a nonprofit organization that inspires and guides people in becoming more relaxed and self-actualized in their home, workplaces, and communities. I also serve on the Board of Directors for the Hawaii Yoga Institute, and I enjoy nature and being with my family and friends. My personal mantra is “Life is sacred. Let’s honor and celebrate it!”

I am the office manager here at Atma Clinic, and I have 40 years experience managing business in many settings and disciplines, particularly in healthcare and technology.

I have known Dr Sandal for many years, and I remember when he originally told me about his aspirations to take up Integrative Medicine when he was attending KU Med. When I had an opportunity to help Dr. Sandal enact this vision, I jumped at the chance because I know how much Integrative Medicine works, and I know its time

has come.

Beyond the Office

I live with my wife Sakhi on a 41-acre plot of land where we tend a small herd of dwarf Zebu cows, grow food in our kitchen garden and from a number of fruit trees, and look after the land. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, and having lived all over the U.S., my passions include yoga, kirtan, gardening, cow protection, walking, travel, cooking (I’m a nearly life-long vegetarian), building, and of course my friends and family.

I studied at MidAmerica Nazarene University and obtained my Medical Assistant certification from Pinnacle Career Institute. At Atma Clinic, I assist Dr. Sandal in providing excellent, personal care to each patient. I do lab work with our clients along with managing medical aspects of the clinic.

I became interested in health care at a young age when my mother was diagnosed with cancer, and I learned about the life-saving capabilities of medicine. After working in traditional medicine for 10 years, I'm excited to be a part of an Integrative Medicine practice.

Beyond the Office

I spend my free time at various sporting events for my two sons, who play football, basketball, soccer, track, and kickball. I also love hiking, reading, board games, Marvel Comic movies, hippos, and fuzzy socks.

I am a LPN who specializes in holistic patient care, building on my years of working in family practice at Newman Regional Health in Emporia, Kansas. My desire to help others led me to become a nurse. I attended Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College.

Because of my son's health issues, I became passionate about holistic healing approaches, which brought me to Atma Clinic.

Beyond the Office

I love to travel, camp, and spend time with my family. I also write poetry and enjoy reading, and I own a small store, Crystal Soul Ride, in Emporia, Kansas.
